Background of the Study
Party defections, where politicians switch allegiances from one political party to another, have become a notable phenomenon in Nigerian politics, particularly as the country approaches major elections. This often results in a shift in political power dynamics, which can influence the electorate's trust in the electoral system (Idris & Mohammed, 2024). In Bauchi Local Government Area (LGA), Bauchi State, party defections have been frequent, especially as politicians attempt to align themselves with parties that seem more capable of securing political power or government patronage (Dangana & Yakubu, 2023). While these defections may benefit politicians by providing them with better prospects of gaining office, they can cause political instability and erosion of electoral trust among voters, particularly when such defections appear self-serving or driven by personal gain rather than ideology (Olawale & Suleiman, 2023). As party loyalty weakens and political allegiance becomes fluid, voters may perceive the political system as unreliable and the electoral process as less legitimate. This study seeks to evaluate the impact of party defections on the level of electoral trust in Bauchi LGA, particularly considering the extent to which such defections undermine or restore voters' confidence in the electoral system.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Party defections have led to questions about the credibility of elections and the integrity of political parties in Bauchi LGA. While these defections are often portrayed as strategic moves to improve political prospects, they also have the potential to negatively affect electoral trust, as voters may feel that their vote no longer matters if politicians are willing to abandon their parties for personal or opportunistic reasons. This study will examine the impact of party defections on electoral trust, focusing on Bauchi LGA as a case study.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
To assess the extent to which party defections in Bauchi LGA influence electoral trust.
To examine the factors that motivate party defections in Bauchi LGA.
To evaluate the consequences of party defections on the electorate’s perception of electoral credibility and the democratic process in Bauchi LGA.
1.4 Research Questions
How do party defections in Bauchi LGA affect voters' trust in the electoral system?
What are the key factors that drive political party defections in Bauchi Local Government Area?
What impact do party defections have on the credibility of elections in Bauchi LGA?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
Party defections significantly reduce electoral trust among voters in Bauchi Local Government Area.
Political party defections are primarily driven by political opportunism rather than ideological differences in Bauchi LGA.
Party defections negatively affect the perceived credibility of elections in Bauchi Local Government Area.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide valuable insights into the dynamics of party defections and their effect on electoral trust. By examining the factors behind defections and their consequences, the study will inform electoral authorities, political parties, and civic organizations on strategies to mitigate the negative impact of defections on voter confidence. It will also contribute to the discourse on party loyalty and political integrity in Nigeria.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
This research will focus on Bauchi Local Government Area and will assess the effects of party defections on electoral trust within this region. The study will be limited to the period leading up to the 2023 elections. Limitations include challenges in accessing sensitive political information and the potential reluctance of voters to share their views due to fear of political backlash.
